Moniteau school board votes on next year’s calendar

The Moniteau School District school board approved the 2022-23 school year calendar at a Monday meeting.

District superintendent Aubrie Schnelle said next school year’s calendar is essentially the same as this year’s.

“It's the same number of professional days a year,” she said. “We still have snow days built in to our school calendar.”

Schnelle also said the district passed a resolution to not raise tax millage above the index, which is at 4.7%.

District business manager Peg Burdick said if a school district planned to raise millage above the index, it would begin a process that would involve contacting the state Department of Education, providing legal notice to taxpayers and finally seeking voter input to pass or deny the motion. Burdick said Moniteau hasn’t raised millage above the index in a number of years.

However, Burdick said once money from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund expires or is spent, school districts may begin to request to exceed the index.

“Learning loss and job retention are uses for the ESSER funds,” Burdick said. “If you are paying jobs through ESSER funding, what are you going to do when that runs out?”
