Charles Duane Long, 89 of Harrisville, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler.

He was born on June 23, 1932, and was the son of Charles Oscar Long and Bernice Myrtle McDeavitt Long in Butler County.

He married Betty Jo Barkley on May 26, 1954, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2021.

Charles had been employed for 44 years at Satec Systems in Grove City, formerly called Arcweld and later called Instron. The company manufactured industrial testing machines. He was also a lifelong farmer.

Charles had been a member of the West Unity Community Church in Harrisville. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran having served during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until 1955. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He especially enjoyed flowers. He was a lifetime member of Harrisville American Legion Post 852.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Lynn (Leo) Edwards of Charleston, S.C., and Cindy Jean (John) Stemper of Plymouth, Minn.; three grandchildren, Mollie (Ryan) Spalding, Matthew Stemper and Kathryn (Chris) Taylor; three great-grandchildren, Sutton and Sloane Spalding, and Ansley Taylor; a sister, Marilyn Kay Peterson of Wyoming, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” Long of West Liberty.

He was preceded in death by his wife; sister, Carol Rae Courtney; and brother, William James Long.

LONG — Family of Charles Duane Long, who died Friday, March 4, 2022, will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

The immediate family will gather for a private interment service the following day at West Liberty Cemetery.
