Ekastown crash sends drivers to hospital, closes roads

Ekastown Road was closed until 5:30 p.m. Thursday as state police investigated a head-on crash involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer.

According to dispatch calls, reports of an accident came in around 10 a.m. near 1020 Ekastown Road.

A white pickup traveling eastbound collided head-on with a tractor-trailer heading westbound, state police said. Footage from a dashboard camera on the tractor-trailer showed the pickup veered into oncoming traffic on a curve in the road, police said.

The driver of the truck was unconscious at the scene and was taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, while the driver of the tractor-trailer was transported by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

An environmental crew had to be called to clean up the large amounts of diesel fuel spilled on the accident site, according to Chris Dean, chief of Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company.

Access to Ekastown Road via a roundabout at Pittsburgh Road and Route 228 was restricted by Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company during the duration of the accident investigation.
