Winter weather to strike county, again
It seems Mother Nature didn’t get the memo that we “spring forward” this week.
Three to 6 inches of snow was expected when the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh issued a winter weather advisory for Butler County lasting from 10 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday.
According to a meteorologist at the NWS, a short period of rain at 9 p.m. Friday would turn to snow, with 1 to 3 inches expected at daybreak. By noon Saturday, morning snow showers were expected to produce a total 3 to 5 inches of snowfall.
Temperatures were expected to remain in the 20-degree range throughout Friday night into Saturday, with blustery winds of up to 35 miles per hour. Scattered snow showers were predicted throughout Saturday, stopping between 8 and 9 p.m.
Christina Gibbs, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation’s District 10, said road crews were out Friday afternoon preparing for the storm.
“We’ll be out all day today and evening to see if anything needs pre-treated, putting down anti-skid when we need to,” she said Friday. “It looks like it will hit in the overnight hours. We’ll have crews out then. We have 42 trucks available.”
Gibbs said there was an expected two- to three-hour period of heavy snowfall, and the goal was to have roads passable during that time.
“The less motorists on the road, the easier it is for us to take care of them,” she said. “Remember to use caution when following a plow truck. It’s best to leave them in front of you, at least six car lengths in front of you.”
To check road restrictions and plow truck routes, Gibbs said to visit 511pa.com.
“It allows folks to check routes prior to their drive to see if there are crashes, see where roads were plowed recently, so they can choose the best route,” she said.
Beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, interstates 79 and 80 will be under Tier 3 restrictions — no commercial vehicles, except loaded single trailers with chains or Alternate Traction Devices, are allowed on roadways operating under this tier. In addition, no school buses, commercial buses, motorcycles, motor homes or towing trailers are allowed on roadways in restricted conditions.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike will operate under Tier 1 restrictions beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, as well. Under Tier 1 restrictions, tractors without trailers, vehicles with towing trailers, school buses, motorcycles and additional vehicles are not permitted on roadways.
