3 more polling sites move
Voters at three more precincts will cast their ballots at new locations in the upcoming primary elections.
Butler County commissioners on Wednesday approved moving the polling locations of three precincts in Summit Township and Butler City due to a combination of voter feedback and a lack of interest from current sites.
The voting sites moving will be Summit Township North, Butler City 2 and Butler City 4-1. Commissioners approved these three moves after in early February approving the moves of polling locations in Center Township, Eau Claire and Evans City.
The Summit Township North precinct will move from the Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department to the Butler Wesleyan Methodist Church, 590 Protzman Road, in a move that will affect 1,114 registered voters.
“We did receive some complaints about the fire department building, related to the building itself as well as the parking there,” said Adam Price, precinct coordinator with the Bureau of Elections.
In addition to voter complaints, Price said the department recently eliminated its kitchen, meaning election workers would lack a space to keep their lunches. The Butler Wesleyan church, Price said, is a better future location.
“It’s centrally located within the precinct, versus the fire department that’s in the northwest corner,” Price said. “The church is easily accessible off Route 422, and they have a good, nice, accessible room, with kitchen and restrooms adjacent, and their parking lot is large.”
The Butler City Ward 2 change moves voters from the Terrace Apartments to the Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St. As of Tuesday, 875 registered voters will be affected.
“We did receive some complaints, again, from residents in the building and poll workers relating to smoking at the building, and the use of the social room and the lack of good parking there,” Price said. “The library, on the other hand, has a good parking lot, good handicapped access. Voters will have a choice of the elevator or stairs to get to the polling room downstairs.”
Price said the library, much like the Wesleyan church in Summit, also has a kitchen and adjacent restrooms.
Voters at the Butler City Ward 4-1 precinct will now vote at the First English Lutheran Church, 241 N. Main St., rather than the previous location at the First United Methodist Church. Price said 739 voters are registered at the precinct.
“Recently, they (First United) did inform us that they did not wish to serve as a polling place any longer,” Price said. “The First English Lutheran Church stepped up and offered their place.”
Much like the prior two locations, Price said, the new location has ample parking, a kitchenette and restrooms.
County solicitor Wil White said the parking for the new location is a city lot, but noted the city’s parking manager assured White that the lot will be “available to voters.”
