Adams Township Police Department K9 Kiko soon will be the recipient of a donated protective vest, courtesy of the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s.

Vested Interest in K9s provides protective vests and other assistance to law enforcement dogs across the country. The program has provided more than 4,563 vests to departments since its creation in 2009. Each vest has a value of $1,744 to $2,283, according to the organization.

The armored vest is bulletproof and stab-proof and was sponsored by Elyza Guzman Anesthesia Services in Cape Coral, Fla. It will be embroidered with the message, “In memory of Katie, an angel with 4 paws.”

“We should expect delivery on that in eight to 10 weeks,” Chief Shawn Anglum said at a meeting on Monday night.

Younger police dogs typically are not fitted for protective vests until they are fully grown, Anglum explained.

“You don’t want to buy a $3,000 piece of equipment and then outgrow it within a year,” he said. “(Kiko) has to get measured now, and they go by age, so he is at that age and now he will get a vest.”

K9 Kiko first started working with the department in August 2021. His handler is Officer Jason Giallorenzo.

Three Degree Road updates

The Adams Township supervisors approved two payments in the amount of $47,371.28 and $160,480.68 for the first phase of the Three Degree Road turnback project.

Vice Chairman Ron Shemela explained the payment is for work that was performed last fall in the Valencia borough portion of the project. The township will be reimbursed for work that was done in Valencia, he added.

“We’re going to go to bid for the second phase probably in two weeks,” he said.
