Miller Minutes: Weekend Events
I had the chance to see “A Doll’s House“ at Grove City College this past weekend. The talent displayed by students was impeccable. The show is doing so well it has sold out, an extra performance has been added to the run, and even that performance has every seat filled. To those in the cast, well done and break a leg this coming weekend.
If you’re disappointed that you cannot catch “A Doll’s House” this weekend, don’t lose heart. Butler County has plenty of shows opening this weekend for the theater-goer, and something to satisfy the music lover, dancer or charitable soul.
The Moniteau School District is set to perform the tale as old as time, “Beauty and the Beast,” at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at 1810 West Sunbury Road. Those hoping to purchase tickets can email ksutton@moniteau.org.
Butler High School students will demonstrate that knowledge is power in the all-school musical “School House Rock Live!” performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Butler Senior High auditorium. This is truly a show for everyone, with songs familiar to young and old alike.
Children hoping to get involved in the theater scene in Butler can audition for the Sing Hosanna! production of “Shrek: The Musical Jr.” from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday or 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at 310 Airport Road. Any child age 7 (as of Sept. 1, 2021) through 18 can take part in the opportunity.
Pittsburgh’s River City Brass band will be hosted by Grove City College for a concert Monday in Pew Fine Arts Center on the college campus. The band focuses on American musical pieces and has been dazzling audiences since the 1980s. For more information, visit gcc.edu.
For the history buff, Grove City College presents historical art exhibit “The Civil War Through a Collection of Photos and Letters” through March 28. The Pew Fine Arts Center Gallery on campus is open from 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
Hoping to shop until you drop this weekend? The GFWC Intermediate League of Butler’s 70th Annual Antique Show and Sale returns to Tanglewood Center, 10 Austin Ave., Lyndora, with a gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday and shows running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Carter’s Kidney Krew Walk, which will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at North Boundary Park in Cranberry Township, is a Seneca Valley High School student’s senior project dedicated to raising awareness about her cousin’s kidney disease. Those participating need only show up and walk, and all are encouraged to donate to the National Kidney Foundation.
The Lyndora Hotel is holding a bigger, better fundraiser for Ukraine from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday on the second floor of the establishment. Live music, a buffet, basket raffles and T-shirts sales are planned, with funds going toward the Brother’s Brother Foundation in Pittsburgh. One hundred percent of proceeds are used for those suffering in Ukraine because of Russia’s invasion, and checks can be made out to Brother’s Brother Foundation.
