Shade tree commission hosting program on protecting hemlocks
Butler City Shade Tree Commission is hosting a free demonstration on fighting the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive insect that threatens to wipe out hemlock trees in Pennsylvania if left untreated.
The demonstration will be at 10:15 a.m. April 6 at 127 Franklin St.
A representative from Rainbow Ecoscience will explain what municipalities and property owners can do to protect hemlocks — the state tree — from the invasive insect.
Methods include soil drench and injection, trunk injection and systemic bark sprays.
“The Shade Tree Commission wants to help residents and local municipalities save our state tree at their homes and in our parks,“ said Diane Smith, commission chairperson.
Registration is not required. The commission can be reached at 724-209-8899 or ButlerCityShadeTree@gmail.com.
