Multiple police departments responded to a standoff at a home at the intersection of Center Avenue and Freeport Road in Butler Township early Saturday evening.

Police described the incident as a possible “domestic situation” with two people involved. An armored vehicle was parked in front of the two-story home for the duration of the incident, and police officers moved around the scene in tactical gear and rifles.

Bystanders watched from across the street in the snow and rain while two dogs were removed from the house. A person was escorted from the house and police exited the house at approximately 7:30 p.m., with traffic being clear by 8 p.m..

“One (person) is in custody, the other one is being treated for injuries. I don’t know the extent of the injuries,” said Sergeant Jim Sasse of Butler Township Police. “It is still under investigation.”

It was unknown Saturday night whether charges would be filed.

Assisting Butler Township were police from Butler City, Zelienople, Jackson Township and members of the Butler County 911 Command Center. Butler Township and Herman firefighters and Butler Ambulance EMTs also assisted at the scene.

A mixture of fire and police vehicles blocked Freeport Road for more than two hours while police continued working. Traffic along Center Avenue remained moving.

The Family Dollar located across the street from the home closed down during the incident.
