Soroptimists present Live your Dream awards
PENN TWP — Three women received scholarships to further their educations at the Soroptimists International of Butler County’s Spring Fling event Saturday at Butler Country Club.
The Live Your Dream awards were presented to applicants for pursing education and overcoming challenges, said Becky Plymale, Live Your Dream awards co-chairwoman. The funds can be used for child care, gas and other expenses that arise while they continue their studies.
“The recipients have overcome significant obstacles, like abuse and addiction. The ones you see today have overcome both. They’re amazing women trying to go to school,” Plymale said.
Live Your Dream award winners Ra’naa Billingsley, Alyssa Mainhart and Lucky Giron were honored with a plaque, bouquet, a $1,000 or $1,5000 scholarship, and applause as their stories were told by members of the club.
Billingsley, award winner in 2020, is pursuing a degree in secondary English education and hopes to attend graduate school for counseling in the future.
Mainhart, one of two 2021 winners, is receiving her undergraduate degree in social work while caring for her family and working a full-time job. According to Plymale, her hope is to empower other women by working in the field of social work.
Giron, employed as a mental health case manager, is going to school part time for social work.
