Beaver County officer hurt in I-79 crash
A New Sewickley Township, Beaver County, police officer was injured after his Ford SUV police vehicle crossed the median Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 79 in Lancaster Township and struck another vehicle head-on.
A state police news release Wednesday revealed that Cpl. Gregory Carney was traveling south on the interstate while returning from a training class in Meadville, Crawford County.
The release said Carney lost control of his patrol vehicle, traveled across the median and into oncoming traffic in the northbound lane.
Carney struck a Jeep Cherokee being operated by Christine Rinn, 68, of Erie, police said.
Carney was transported by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was treated and released.
Rinn was taken by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was listed in stable condition on Wednesday, according to the news release.
The accident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday near the 90 mile marker.
The area was closed until 10:45 p.m. Tuesday as state police investigated the accident, according to state Department of Transportation, District 10 officials.
