Local woman collecting items to aid fire victim

Mike West lost everything when the Bredin Street home in Butler he rented was severely damaged by fire Tuesday. Many items were barely recognizable, including the stove. Submitted

Mike West lost every single thing he owns Tuesday when a fire spread through the house he’d been renting for four years on Bredin Street in Butler.

Without even a change of clothes, West was able to buy a new toothbrush, shampoo and other toiletries, plus a few items of clothing, with the prepaid Visa card provided to him by the Red Cross.

That card also paid for a few nights at a local hotel, and the devastated West now is working with Catholic Charities to secure emergency housing.

In addition to the battery-powered bicycle he used to get around and the gaming system he used with his son when he visited every other weekend, the worst loss, West said, are the photographs that cataloged his 47 years.

Those interested in donating items, gift cards or clothing to West can call Parker at 724-968-2018.
