Youths hunt colorful eggs at Winfield park
Easter fun was in the chilly air Saturday, as 1,100 to 1,200 people attended the Winfield Township Eggstravaganza at the township park.
Terri Leslie, event coordinator, said more than 500 children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, face painting, a petting zoo, balloon animals, a caricature artist and photos with Winnie the Winfield Wabbit, who many say looked suspiciously similar to Joyce Hutterer of Saxonburg.
All events were free, and those with a heart on the back of their entry ticket received a large gift basket while those with a star on their tickets received a smaller basket.
Children were divided into four age categories to hunt for more than 19,000 eggs stuffed with candy, money and free book coupons from the South Butler Community Library.
Leslie said about 20 student volunteers from Knoch High School stuffed the eggs in a little more than one hour.
The event also boasted six food trucks, three tables of baked goods for sale, fresh Easter flowers at a reasonable price and dried flower arrangements for purchase from a local artist.
Youngsters also could climb into the cab of a firetruck from Saxonburg or Buffalo Township volunteer fire companies.
Leslie said the A.J. Kennedy family, who own a nearby farm, decorated round bales of hay in Easter motif.
The Winfield Township Eggstravaganza was created last year when the event outgrew the egg hunt normally held at Roebling Park in Saxonburg by the Saxonburgh Business Association.
