IN MEMORIAM

In loving memory of Dr. Michael John Neely, who passed away April 15, 2020.

Dr. Michael John Neely was born in Butler, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1970, to Janet (Zapp) and Fred Neely. Michael graduated from Butler Senior High School in 1988. He first attended the University of Pennsylvania followed by the University of Pittsburgh from which he graduated in 1992, Magna Cum Laude, with his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. Michael completed his Specialty Internal Medicine Track Internship at Meridia South Pointe Hospital of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Healthcare System and was Chief Resident of the MetroHealth Medical Center at Case Western Reserve where he completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency. As well, he was Medical Director of the Transitional Care Unit at Deaconess Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio in 2003.

Michael moved to New York City where he worked at Downtown Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation / Seaport Orthopaedics. He, along with two business partners, then opened NY Sports Med which was in operation from 2007 to 2015; Michael was owner and president. He was also the owner and president of Orthology and MJN Medical. In addition to New York, Michael was a licensed physician in Ohio, Florida, and California. On multiple occasions, he was awarded as one of New York’s Top Doctors as selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

Michael’s certifications over the years include Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Subspecialty Board Certification in Sports Medicine American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and he was a Disability Evaluating Physician Panel Member for the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation. As well, he was a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Osteopathic Association of New York State, and the County Medical Societies.

Michael died on April 15, 2020, of Covid-19 which it is believed he contracted while at work.

Michael was the beloved son of Janet (Zapp) and Fred Neely, the father of Manuel Neely, the brother of Pam Neely Aldridge (David), the uncle of Hannah and Christian Aldridge, the nephew of Carol and Ed Butler, Rhonda and Joseph Hasychak, Sharon and Butch McDonald, Mary Zapp, and Richard Zapp, and the cousin of Ashley and Michael Helmstaedter, Amber (Butler) and John (JR) Holland, Adam McDonald (Jamie Shuler), Ben and Kelsey McDonald, Chris and Joyce McDonald, David and Heather McDonald, and their families. Michael was the beloved friend to many and his dog, Riley.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Neely, his grandparents, Helen Neely, and Margaret and John Zapp, his uncle, John Zapp, and his cousin Ed Butler.

The Neely and Aldridge families are grateful for the love and support of their family, friends, and of Michael’s dear friends as they continue to process their loss on the second year anniversary of Michael’s death. "Grief is the last act of love we can give to those we loved. Where there is deep grief, there was great love."

One of Michael’s favorite charities was St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital for those who might want to honor his memory.
