Butler man charged in Easter morning rape, assault
Police arrested and charged a Butler man following an investigation into an alleged rape early Easter morning in Butler Township.
Butler Township police filed charges Sunday against Zantae W. Weltner, 22, including felony counts of rape, aggravated assault and aggravated indecent assault, as well as misdemeanor counts of indecent assault, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint and reckless endangerment.
Following his arraignment by District Judge William Fullerton, Weltner was taken to Butler County Prison, where he remains on $100,000 bond.
Butler County 911 dispatched police at 1:31 a.m. to an area near the 11th Frame bar on Fairground Hill Road, Butler Township.
According to charging documents, the alleged victim, a 32-year-old woman, had already been taken by ambulance from the scene when officers arrived.
Police said they talked to security guards from the bar, who identified Weltner, the alleged victim and others who were with them. One of the guards told police the alleged victim had made remarks about Weltner to security, and they overheard her make other comments about him.
“During the course of the evening, (a guard) overheard a conversation between Weltner and (the woman,) where (the woman) advised Weltner that she was not leaving with him, and that she does not want to leave with him,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.
Police said a short time after the woman left, multiple witnesses heard a woman screaming for help, and security guards rushed toward the sound. One of the guards told police they saw Weltner running from an area uphill from the bar where trailers are situated.
One guard claimed Weltner said “a girl needs help up there.” Witnesses continued toward the woman’s calls for help, and they found her crawling on her hands and knees, injured and with disheveled clothing, claiming he hit and raped her.
Police interviewed the woman later Sunday at the hospital. She said Weltner approached her at the bar, but she told him she was not interested in him.
“Just prior to leaving, (Weltner) rushed passed her to open the front door,” police said.
Police said the woman walked up the hill into the area of trailers. She told police Weltner ran after her, tripping over logs multiple times in the process.
“She told (Weltner) she was not interested, and then he knocked her to the ground and she fell face first,” police said.
The woman told police Weltner jammed his forearm into the back of her neck, pushing her face to the ground, and then pulled at her clothing. She said he hit her again and raped her.
“The male jumped on top of her and began smashing her head into the ground while telling her he had a gun,” police said. “She continued to scream and resist until he got up and ran away.”
Police photographed the woman’s injuries and clothing. Police said a rape kit was used to collect further evidence.
Police said they also noticed and photographed injuries on Weltner when they interviewed him later. He had scrapes on his left hand, an 8-inch cut to his left outer forearm, a small cut to his right forearm and a scrape on his right shin.
“All injuries support (the woman’s) statement that he fell over a log or tree during the assault,” police said.
According to police, Weltner claimed he did open the door for the woman, but he said he told her he was not interested in her either.
Weltner allegedly told police he heard a woman calling for help and rushed in the direction of the calls; however, he claimed he saw security guards heading the same way and decided to let them handle the situation instead.
Police said Weltner told officers he got into his friends’ vehicle, and his friends suggested establishing an alibi because “he did not rape her.”
Weltner is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 21 before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell.
