BUTLER TWP — The chilly drizzle and freezing rain on Monday morning were no match for the hearty RLS Construction Group crew who tore down a water tower that has stood on the V.A. Butler Health Care campus off New Castle Road since the end of World War II.
Paula McKarl, V.A. Butler spokesperson, said the water tower was built in 1944 and has not been in use for several years because infrastructure improvements have rendered it obsolete.
In its day, the water tower provided storage of potable water and maintained water pressure for the VA campus.
Workers used a huge crane, cutting torches and other means to drop the 143-foot water tower, which was behind Deshon Place.
The PLS Construction Group crew took the tower down in one day, but McKarl said a few days cleanup will likely follow.
McKarl declined to share the cost of the tower’s demolition.
