3 Zelie businesses hit by vandalism, burglary
One arrest has been made after three Zelienople businesses reported vandalism and one reported a burglary, Friday night and early Saturday morning.
Zelienople police Sunday confirmed they arrested one person following their investigation into a burglary at the Exxon service station at 517 S. Main St. Police said the same person is believed to be the culprit in vandalizing other local businesses.
Police said following his interview Saturday, officers took the man to Butler County Prison, and charges are being prepared for filing. His name was not immediately available, but it will be after charges are filed, likely Monday.
Zelienople Police Chief Jim Miller said the gas station was broken into at 10:30 p.m. Friday.
“One of the guys was still in the back watching TV when he heard the breaking of the door,” said Miller.
Exxon clerk Mehedi Hassan said he was in the rear of the building when he heard a crash.
“I hear a big noise. Someone broke the glass,” he said.
Hassan said he peeked from the back of the building and saw someone trying to enter through the broken glass.
“I was shaking,” he said.
Hassan called the owner and then called 911.
Hassan said the suspect continued to break a bigger glass window and knock over a shelf. He attempted to break into the cash register but was unsuccessful. The only thing stolen were some tobacco products, Hassan said.
Down the road at Fisher’s Bar & Grill, 131 S. Main St., red spray paint covered its walls and the front door was smashed, Miller said.
Zelienople resident Jason Sarver said he woke up to people sending pictures of the damage to the restaurant. When he saw what was done to his friends’ business, he sprang into action.
“I didn’t like the damage done to the town,” he said. “This town works together. It's not a small community, but it’s a tight community."
Justin Dow, owner of Fisher’s along with Grant McCabe, said the incident occurred shortly after they left the restaurant around 4 a.m.
“We don’t know who did it,” he said. “On our cameras, the guy was wearing a mask.”
The front of the building had the number 666 with a skull and crossbones, along with the words “Hey Satan. Where is Snow White” painted on it.
In addition, there were more words on the side and back deck of the restaurant, including “Jesus” and a giant red phallic symbol.
Neighboring business Sarah’s II Nails, 127 S. Main St., also was vandalized with spray paint. Miller said the vandalism was discovered by officers on patrol around 5 a.m. Saturday.
Graffiti on the side of the salon mentioned Fisher’s employees by name. Underneath was a cross symbol and “ZOG.”
According to the Anti-Defamation League, “ZOG” is a white supremacist acronym for "Zionist Occupied Government," which reflects a white supremacist belief that the U.S. government is controlled by Jews.
Miller said his department was reviewing video taken during the time of the incidents.
“Usually we don’t have anything happening like this,” he said.
According to Dow, members of the community showed up early Saturday to help clean up Fisher’s front and side walls.
“We had a good turnout to repaint the front and side of the building,” he said. “The people of the town are amazing. Everyone’s here to help.”
