BUTLER TWP — Emergency crews responded to a property on South Breezewood Drive around 3 p.m. Sunday where they found a shed engulfed in flame, but the rest of the property was otherwise safe.

“This is not how I wanted to spend Mother’s Day,” said homeowner Beth Warheit, who looked over a her shed, completely charred and leveled.

Warheit’s home sits about 50 yards away and was unaffected by the blaze.

“I’m just glad my son was in the house,” said Warheit, who was examined and cleared by EMS at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Warheit said she mowed her lawn and parked the mower in the shed where it usually is kept. She said when she finished weed-whacking, she saw smoke coming from the shed.

“The tractor was on fire,” Warheit said. “I had a fire extinguisher and grabbed it.”

Warheit said from the entrance of the shed, she tried to aim the foam at the tractor, but she couldn’t quite put out the flames, which then spread to the rest of the shed.

“Everything in there started catching, one after another,” she said.

Warheit said she has homeowner’s insurance, but she wasn’t sure if it covered the shed and its contents, which included the tractor, a snowblower and other miscellaneous items.

An avid archer and hunter, Warheit said she was disappointed to lose multiple nice-quality targets she kept stored behind the shed.

Warheit said she was thankful for having a habit of keeping gasoline in the shed because she felt it was safer than inside the home. She said she was most thankful her son was safe.

“I’d rather my shed catch fire than my house,” she said.

Firefighters at the scene said the fire was a straightforward battle, and they were glad to have a hydrant across the street for easy access to water.

The Butler VA Fire Department was first to arrive on scene. They were joined shortly after by Butler Township Fire District, which brought a tanker in case water wasn’t readily available. Butler Ambulance assisted with Warheit’s evaluation at the scene.

Firefighters also noted the wooded area around the shed was wet, which prevented a spread into nearby brush.

Crews cleared the scene around 3:45 p.m.
