The first round of the 2022 elections is Tuesday when county voters can select the candidates who will represent their parties in the general election in November.

Polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the primary that will determine the candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, governor, lieutenant governor, state House of Representatives and state committees.

The primary for a six-year term in the U.S. Senate to replace Pat Toomey, who is not running for re-election, has drawn seven Republican and four Democratic candidates.

GOP voters will chose from Kathy Barnette of Montgomery County, Mehmet Oz of Montgomery County, George Bochetto of Philadelphia County, Jeff Bartos of Montgomery County, Dave McCormick of Allegheny County, Sean Gale of Montgomery County and Carla Sands of Cumberland County.

The Democratic ballot will have candidates Alex Khalil of Montgomery County, Conor Lamb of Allegheny County, Malcom Kenyatta of Philadelphia County and John Fetterman of Allegheny County. Lamb represents the 17th District in Congress. Fetterman is lieutenant governor.

For a two-year term representing the 16th District in Congress, longtime-incumbent Mike Kelly’s name will be alone on the Republican ballot with no challengers.

Democrat voters will have the choice of Dan Pastore of Erie County and Rick Telesz of Lawrence County to challenge Kelly in November.

The governor’s race has eight Republican candidates vying to face Josh Shapiro, state Attorney General, of Montgomery County, who is the only Democratic candidate.

GOP candidates are Lou Barletta of Luzerne County, Douglas Mastriano of Franklin County, Nche Zama of Northampton County, Dave White of Delaware County, Melissa Hart of Allegheny County, Bill McSwain of Chester County, Charlie Gerow of Cumberland County, Joe Gale of Montgomery County and Jake Corman of Centre County. Corman, a state Senator, and Hart, a former member of congress, have both withdrawn from the primary, but their names remains on the ballot.

For lieutenant governor, Republicans will have nine candidates to chose from and Democrats will have three.

Seeking the Republican nomination are Clarice Schillinger of Montgomery County, James Earl Jones of Montgomery County, Rick Saccone of Allegheny County, John Brown of Northampton County, Chris Frye of Lawrence County, Jeff Coleman of Cumberland County, Russ Diamond of Lebanon County, Carrie Lewis DelRosso of Allegheny County and Teddy Daniels of Wayne County.

Vying for the Democratic nod are Austin Davis of Allegheny County, Ray Sosa of Montgomery County and Brian Sims of Philadelphia County.

The governor and lieutenant governor serve four-year terms in office.

In the 8th Legislative District, Republicans John L. Kennedy of Middlesex Township and Eric DiTullio of Lancaster Township are challenging incumbent Aaron Bernstine of Lawrence County. No Democratic candidates entered the primary.

In the 11th District, Jennifer Steele of Summit Township is challenging incumbent Marci Mustello for the GOP nomination. No Democratic candidates are running.

Voters in the 12th District will select candidates to compete to replace Republican Daryl Metcalfe, who is not seeking re-election. The Republican candidates are Stephenie Scialabba of Cranberry Township, Gregg Semel of Zelienople and Scott Timko of Cranberry Township. The winner will face Democrat Robert Vigue of Valencia, who is unopposed in the primary.

In the 17th District, incumbent Republican Tim Bonner of Mercer County has no challengers in either party.

Members of the House serve two-year terms in office.

Voters have the option of choosing a write-in candidate by writing the name of the candidate on the ballot in all of the races.
