Chilean men waive extradition to face theft charges in county

Two men from Chile on Tuesday waived extradition to two other states to face charges alleging that they used a debit card they stole in Cranberry Township to buy more than $8,000 in merchandise earlier this month.

Through an interpreter and Assistant Public Defender Jennifer Popovich, Fabian Ignacio Navarro-Aliaga, 32, and Marcelo Alejandro Telechea-Droguett, 25, waived extradition at a hearing in Butler County Common Pleas Court before Senior Judge William R. Shaffer.

Assistant District Attorney Laura Pitchford said both men are facing burglary, credit card fraud and other charges in two counties in Virginia and one county in Connecticut.

Both men are being held in the county prison in lieu of $300,000 bail while they are awaiting a preliminary hearing on felony charges of unauthorized device access and receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of theft from a motor vehicle. The hearing is scheduled June 3 before district Judge Kevin Flaherty in Cranberry.

Cranberry Township police arrested Navarro-Aliaga and Telechea-Droguett Tuesday after they allegedly were found with items bought with a stolen debit card.

According to court documents, police responded to North Boundary Park around noon, where a woman reported that $600 cash, her debit card and her iPhone 10 were stolen from her purse, which was inside her unlocked vehicle.

Police said security footage led them to Navarro-Aliaga and Telechea-Droguett. They allegedly purchased three laptop computers for $7,946 from Best Buy and made purchases totaling $772 at Kay Jewelers using the woman’s debit card.

The men were found in possession of the laptops and jewelry, and were wearing the clothes they wore at Best Buy and Kay Jewelers when they were arrested in a silver 2018 Chevrolet Cruse that they were seen driving in the footage, police said.
