Karns City advances with walk-off win
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Karns City advanced in the District 9 Class 2A baseball playoffs Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over Kane at Punxsutawney’s Kuntz Field.
The second-seeded Gremlins (13-5) won the game in walk-off fashion.
Braden Grossman delivered one-out single over the drawn-in outfield with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, plating Cole Sherwin with the winning run. Sherwin was the winning pitcher, working a scoreless top of the inning.
Michael Neff doubled, singled and had an RBI for the Gremlins. Tyler Hutchison contributed two singles and an RBI for KC.
The Gremlins will play Redbank Valley — a 6-1 winner over Curwensville — at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the next round at Punxsutawney. The game could be moved to Slippery Rock University’s Critchfield Park, however.
Fourth-seeded Moniteau (12-6) had its season ended earlier in the day with a 4-2 Class 2A playoff loss to No. 5 seed Brookville. Branson Carson took the loss on the mound despite striking out seven in 5.2 innings pitched.
Brock Matthews had a run-scoring double for the Warriors. Jakub Obman and Carson had doubles in the game as well. Moniteau had won four of its last five games entering the contest.
Brookville (10-8) won for the fifth time in six games. Winning pitcher Hunter Greer tossed a complete game, striking out six and scattering six hits. Jamison Rhoads had a double, single and RBI while Bryce Rafferty had a double and RBI for Brookville.
