Realtor dies in Penn Twp crash
PENN TWP — An 86-year-old man is dead after a Thursday afternoon crash on Route 8.
Ed Shields, the owner of Ed Shields Realtor in Penn Township, died in the crash, which happened around 4:05 p.m. at the intersection of Route 8 and East Airport Road, Deputy Coroner Larry Barr confirmed.
Penn Township police said the crash occurred when the driver of a white Toyota attempted to make a left turn from the southbound lane of Route 8 onto East Airport Road without leaving enough time for the other vehicle — a navy blue Toyota traveling north on Route 8 — to stop.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the crash.
The driver of the other vehicle, a Butler man, also suffered minor injuries in the crash and was not transported. Neither vehicle was carrying additional passengers, police said.
According to Tom Lasky, who worked with Shields at Ed Shields Realtor located on Route 8, Shields was still “very active” in his business and was in the office earlier in the day Thursday.
Having worked with Shields for about 40 years, Lasky said his death will impact more than just his close family and friends.
“He was at the office six days a week,” Lasky said. “Where we go from here, I have no idea.”
The northbound lane of Route 8 was closed and traffic was redirected for about an hour after the crash. East Airport Road was also closed at the intersection.
Penn Township police, Middlesex Township police, the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service responded to the crash.
