13K Penn State grads given diplomas with wrong president’s signature

After a “miscommunication” that led to Penn State issuing diplomas containing the wrong university president’s signature, Pennsylvania’s largest university now plans to resend corrected diplomas to thousands of its recent spring graduates.

According to university spokesperson Wyatt DuBois, some 13,167 diplomas were impacted by the error. He said the cost to fix the mistake was still being finalized and was not immediately known.

At issue was the date when Penn State’s newest president, Neeli Bendapudi, was set to take over. Bendapudi’s tenure officially started May 9, while former university president Eric Barron stayed on until May 8. But commencement occurred between May 6-8, and Bendapudi’s signature was the one on the diplomas.

“We are working quickly to resolve and correct these matters,” DuBois said. “Penn State plans to reissue the electronic diplomas and to also deliver by U.S. mail the corrected paper diplomas to our spring 2022 graduates.”

Penn State chalked up the error to a “miscommunication with the diploma vendor.” Separately, both DuBois and the registrar office also said there was a “technical issue” with Certified Electronic Diplomas (CeDiplomas) displaying students’ names incorrectly. They reiterated that the electronic diplomas would also be reissued.

Recent graduates were notified of the mix-up in an email earlier this week. In that email, which some students posted on social media, Penn State told the Class of 2022 that the corrected diplomas are expected to be delivered the week of June 13.
