The man accused of burglarizing multiple Zelienople businesses last month is now being accused of intimidating witnesses with a “suspicious package,” according to police.

Zelienople police filed additional charges Monday against Michael P. Shipley, 33, of Zelienople, including felony counts of witness intimidation and terroristic threats, as well as misdemeanor counts of harassment, disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Shipley is free after posting $30,000 bond on a different but related case, but he is back in Butler County Prison on a new $25,000 bond, following his arraignment Monday by District Judge Kevin O’Donnell.

Police said they arrived around 10:05 p.m. June 12 at Fisher’s Bar and Grill for a disturbance involving Shipley, who in May was arrested and charged for allegedly vandalizing the bar and a couple other businesses in the area on May 6 and 7.

“I spoke with the bartender, and she informed me that Shipley was gone but left the suspicious package out back on the garbage can,” police said. “(The bartender) said she was very fearful and terrified that the suspicious package was some sort of an explosive.”

Police said the bar’s owner reviewed security footage and saw Shipley bring the package. Other employees voiced their fear of the package.

“(A different employee) was upset and stated everyone was on high alert (about) what (was) inside the package,” police said.

Police said they examined the package briefly and called Shipley by phone.

“Shipley would not give me a direct answer on what was inside the package,” police said. “Shipley was amused over the fact that everyone was panicking at the business (and claiming) that he left an explosive device.”

“Shipley said ‘Trust me, it’s not a bomb,’” police said.

Police later moved the box away from the business and opened it.

“Inside was a bunch of sticks and stones, along with Vitamin D calcium pills, Ziplock sandwich bags and the remainder of a roll of duct tape that was used on the outside (of the box) to tape the package shut,” police said.

Police said a short time later, officers arrested Shipley without incident.

A preliminary hearing for the latest charges is scheduled for June 21 before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz.

Shipley also has three other pending criminal cases in Butler County. Those include the May filing which has proceeded to Butler County Common Pleas Court, where Shipley is expected to appear July 26 for formal arraignment.
