Historic building for sale, owner wants eatery to live on

While the Hotel Saxonburg is for sale, it is not closing.

That’s the word from owner Judy Ferree, who listed the building for sale about 10 days ago.

She said the liquor license is included in the $1.2 million sale price so that the facility will continue as a tavern and restaurant.

Ferree said she is selling the historic hotel and restaurant, which has been in continuous operation since 1832 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, in preparation for retirement.

“I hope someone can come along and take it to the next level,” said Ferree, who has owned the property for a dozen years.

Ferree said sales have tripled in her 12 years as owner, and she continues to provide the Pay It Forward meals to local needy residents.

She has also participated in fundraisers with the Saxonburg Police Department when officers needed bulletproof vests and specialized training.

Ferree was on the team that created the popular Mingle on Main events that are held on Main Street once per month in the temperate months.

While the coronavirus pandemic devastated many restaurants over its two years of virulence, the Hotel Saxonburg experienced its best year last year.

“I’m really proud of that,” Ferree said.

She attributes that statistic to community loyalty and a new penchant among area residents for supporting local businesses.

“I just appreciate so much all the support my employees and the customers have given me,” Ferree said.

She said she has had interested parties touring the hotel and restaurant since it went up for sale.

Bill Gillespie, Saxonburg mayor, said Ferree helps nonprofits, other Saxonburg businesses and the police department.

“There is nobody like Judy,” Gillespie said. “She has done more for businesses in this town and for people in this community than anybody will ever know.”

He called Ferree a good friend.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with her,” Gillespie said.
