Zane Cupec

Zane Cupec of Lafayette, Colo., formerly of Slippery Rock, graduated with a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he taught and designed several music courses.

His research focused on African Cuban music, involved fieldwork in Cuba and has been presented at various national conferences.

Cupec is a 2007 graduate of Slippery Rock Area High School and a 2012 graduate of West Virginia University, and he received a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in 2014.

Cupec and his wife, Mei, have a daughter.

He is the son of Robert and Nancy Cupec of Slippery Rock.

Two Butler County students have been selected to each receive a $2,000 John O. Hanna Scholarship Award from the Northwest Bancshares Inc. Charitable Foundation.

Aidan Uher, who recently graduated from Seneca Valley High School, and his brother Colin Uher, a senior at the University of Pittsburgh, are the sons of Philip and Kris Uher of Cranberry Township.

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist the children of employees of Northwest Bank and its affiliates in furthering their education. Of 97 students, 30 were selected to receive awards for the 2022-23 academic school year.

Alexa Bolena of Cranberry Township was on Miami University of Ohio’s student venture capital investment team to win the U.S. Northeast Regional competition of the 2022 Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC), qualifying it for the global finals at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This team competed against eight other finalists from around the world and placed in the top three, behind only University of California-Berkeley and Georgetown University. This is the fourth time that a student venture investment team from Miami University has finished in the top three of the VCIC.

Abby O'Shea

Seneca Valley High School graduating senior Abby O'Shea was the winner of $1,000 in the first Georgie Smigel Group Scholarship Essay Contest.

Abby and first runner-up Rachel Smith stopped by the Coldwell Banker Realty office in Cranberry Township to collect their awards.

Smigel said, “These two exemplary essays conveyed the image and wholeness of community that we feel makes our area such a wonderful place to live.”

Smith, along with three other runners-up, Torrey Hill, Kaitlyn Livorse and Peyton Riddle, received substantial gift cards to be used for college or secondary education expenses.

Two recent Butler Senior High School graduates have been named as recipients of the 2022 Rosanne Cavalero and Jane Cavalero Scholarships.

The Rosanne and Jane Cavalero Scholarships are distributed through the Wellington C. Carl Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation. The funds provide scholarships in equal shares to the male and female graduates from Butler High School having the highest cumulative grade point average who pursue post-secondary education.

Rebekah Kalberer will receive $7,131. Rebekah is the daughter of Kenneth and Lisa Kalberer of Butler. She will be studying actuarial science at Florida State University.

Isaac Busler will also receive $7,131. He is the son of Shaun and Melissa Busler of Butler. He will be attending Grove City College and majoring in computer engineering.
