PENN TWP — Two of three people injured in a Sunday afternoon vehicle crash on Brownsdale Road were flown to hospitals by medical helicopters.

Emergency crews were called around 2:30 p.m. to the 300 block of Brownsdale Road for a two-vehicle, head-on crash. Emergency crews quickly blocked all traffic around the scene while evaluating two people in a Toyota Highlander and one person in a Jeep Patriot.

Both vehicles showed heavy front-end damage. Police said all involved wore seat belts, and air bags in both vehicles deployed.

Emergency crews had to lift a woman to remove her from the front-passenger seat of the Toyota and placed her directly on a stretcher.

A 17-year-old male driver of the Jeep sat along the road while EMTs evaluated him, then they helped him to his feet and assisted him onto a stretcher.

Both were taken to Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport, where they were flown to Pittsburgh hospitals.

The third person, a man who was driving the Toyota, was evaluated at the scene and later taken by ambulance to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, the same location as his passenger.

The Jeep’s driver was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

According to Penn Township Police, witnesses saw the 17-year-old, who was driving east, drift into the oncoming lane. Police said the driver did not know seem to know or remember why he crossed into opposing traffic.

Police said the collision pushed the Toyota about 50 feet backward from the point of impact.

After debris was cleared from the road and both vehicles were towed, crews began clearing the scene around 4 p.m.

Penn Township firefighters, three Butler Ambulance crews and Middlesex Township Police assisted at the scene.
