PENN TWP — One by air and another by land, two drivers involved in a vehicle crash Sunday afternoon along Route 8 were taken to hospitals for their injuries.

According to police, a 60-year-old Allison Park man was the first to be taken from the scene of a crash that happened around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pittsburgh and Dodds roads.

As first responders relayed information to Butler County 911 dispatchers, it was noted the man had suffered a head injury.

An ambulance took the Allison Park man to a medical helicopter waiting further down Pittsburgh Road, across from Hunter Truck Sales in a parking lot. The helicopter took the man to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The second driver, a 94-year-old Butler man, was seen sitting in the grass along the road and speaking with two EMTs. He was then assisted into a gurney and loaded into the back of a second ambulance that took him to a unknown hospital.

Penn Township police investigated at the scene with assistance from Middlesex Township Police.

Police said the Butler man, driving a Honda SUV, was driving south on Route 8 and made a left turn toward Dodds Road. Police said in doing so, he turned into the path of a convertible driven by the Allison Park man.

Police said their investigation is ongoing.

Two tow trucks were called to remove the mangled vehicles. While both vehicles showed heavy front-end damage with emphasis to the passenger side, the convertible had significant crumpling into the engine compartment.

Throughout the duration of the crash, emergency crews restricted traffic around the scene, rerouting both northbound lanes to the passing lane of Route 8 South. Southbound traffic was restricted to one lane during that time.

Crews cleared the scene around 3:31 p.m. In addition to police, Penn Township firefighters and Butler and East Butler ambulance services assisted at the scene.
