Commissioners approve tech upgrades for emergency services

Dispatcher Eric Butler focuses on his monitors at the Butler County Emergency Dispatch Center.

The county commissioners approved a contract to correct minor errors in the new 911 system, and agreed to buy virtual private network licenses for emergency medical and fire personnel.

The commissioners on Wednesday approved a $45,000 contract with Mission Critical Partners to clean up geographical information system data using state money, and agreed to buy 250 VPN licenses that will allow EMS crews and firefighters to use computer tablets as mobile data terminals to record service calls.

Steve Bicehouse, emergency service director, said the contractor will correct minor errors with street addresses and boundary lines in the new 911 system.

The Sonic Wall VPN licenses, which will cost $1,704.86, will allow EMS and fire personnel to create and record calls by using tablets without calling 911, he said.

He said he hasn’t looked into the cost of buying the tablets.

The licenses will also allow EMS and fire personnel to access mapping software, log in and out of service and develop response plans.

Police have mobile data terminal computers in their vehicles that they use for service calls, he added.
