New symphony season will explore modern, classical realms

Broadway standards, cinema tracks and classical pieces will play a part in the Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s newly announced season.

The six-show line up will explore modern favorites as well as staple pieces by composers such as Beethoven and Rachmaninoff.

John Furman, executive director of the symphony, said the season is sure to attract any type of music lover.

“We have three on the more classical side and three concerts with more familiar things. It’s a nice blend for folks,” he said.

The season will kick off in October with “Bravo! Broadway,” featuring singers from the Great White Way.

“Hugh Panaro played the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway for several years, and Scarlett Strallen starred as Mary Poppins,” Furman said.

“Voices of Nature,” the November concert, will have the symphony’s own Hilary Philipp featured on the oboe.

Shortly after, the ever-popular “Holiday Traditions” concert in December will be fun for listeners of all ages, Furman said.

“There’s a lot of traditional Christmas songs in this one, last year we had ‘Polar Express,’” he said.

Up-and-coming cellist Nicholas Canellakis will be the special guest moving the symphony through Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances” concert in February.

In March, high school musicians will play alongside the symphony members for the “The Inextinguishable” concert.

To round out the season, “The Golden Age of Hollywood” in April will feature pieces from the classic film soundtracks of “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Gone With the Wind” and “High Noon,” among others.

“People are naturally excited about the kick off being ‘Bravo! Broadway,’ and April’s ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ will be more known by people,” Furman said.

After the symphony’s performance with the Jacksons, formerly known as the Jackson 5, at Celebrity Care Fest last Saturday, he said the musicians have been getting new recognition.

Furman added that he hopes folks will venture to Butler Intermediate High School auditorium and experience their collection of shows.

“Our name’s been getting out there, and it’s exciting,” he said. “We put so much into this, and it’s such high quality, I’d hate for people to miss our season.”
