Police: Mich. thieves target Hellcats vehicles

State police arrested two men from Michigan who they said traveled to Butler County to steal specific models of an expensive car.

Police filed charges Wednesday against Dorale L. Doyle, 40, of Southfield, Mich., and Ladon R. Rogers, 39, of Allen Park, Mich., each including three counts of felony conspiracy to commit theft.

Both men were arraigned Wednesday morning before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell, who placed them in Butler County Prison in lieu $100,000 bond each.

Police received a tip July 20 from a Michigan law enforcement agency that the pair would be targeting Hellcat model vehicles while driving in a 2004 GMC Sierra with a specific Michigan license plate.

According to Kelley Blue Book, a newer model Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat can range from $68,000 to $84,000, and a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat can range from $77,000 to $86,000.

Police said the GMC Sierra vehicle had been spotted July 20 passing a dealership, which had a 2019 white Hellcat on its Evans City Road lot.

“Contact with the dealership indicated the vehicle to be missing,” police said. “This Challenger Hellcat was recovered later that morning in Southpointe, Mich., which is a suburb of Detroit.”

Police said Michigan law enforcement contacted them again Tuesday after they spotted the Sierra heading toward Pennsylvania again.

Police said members of the Western Regional Auto Theft Task Force assembled along the turnpike and began surveying the suspects’ vehicle.

Police followed the Sierra to an Adams Township auto dealer at the intersection of Route 228 and Scharberry Lane.

“The GMC was observed circling the dealership for an extended period of time, often passing the dealership on Route 228 approximately 10 times as stationary and active surveillance was maintained.

Police said around 12:30 a.m., Doyle exited the vehicle with a black bag and walked “directly toward” the Hellcat on the lot. Police said they then witnessed him enter the vehicle and get inside.

“While (Doyle) was inside, (task force) members closed in on the male, who was observed by troopers as reaching under the passenger side compartment,” police said.

Police said Doyle was arrested at the scene, and police conducted a traffic stop on the Sierra and arrested Rogers, who was alone in the vehicle at the time.

Preliminary hearings for both have been scheduled for Aug. 9 before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz.
