Butler Eagle carrier earns state recognition
A Butler Eagle newspaper carrier has earned state recognition for her diligence in providing the daily news to 320 customers.
Dawn Plaisted, of Connoquenessing, was named third-place winner in the 2022 Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation’s Newspaper Carrier of the Year contest.
Plaisted placed third last month in the Butler Eagle’s Carrier of the Year contest, where she was feted with an employee reception along with winner Sandy Angus and second-place carrier Laurie Williams.
Plaisted delivers in Connoquenessing borough, Franklin and Connoquenessing townships and other areas around Moraine State Park.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Plaisted said of the state honor. “I totally didn’t expect somebody from Connoquenessing, Pa., to win. It’s a nice surprise.”
She began delivering the Eagle in 1998 to earn extra money for her daughter's wedding.
Plaisted has delivered on and off since then, much to the delight of her customers.
"They are all very terrific people," Plaisted said. "I could not pick a favorite."
Plaisted is slightly uncomfortable with the state honor as one of so many dedicated newspaper carriers.
“I’m humbled because there are so many of us, and we all try to do the best jobs we can,” she said. “It’s an honor just to be nominated.”
A foundation news release said the contest, held since 1959, recognizes the exemplary performance of carriers of all ages.
“It is more important than ever to show exemplary carriers how much they are valued and appreciated for their contributions,” the release states.
Plaisted will receive a prize of $150 from the foundation.
“To me, its been a really good job,” Plaisted said. “I love it and I love the people I work with, and the office girls at the Eagle are awesome, too.”
