Nicholas Anderson
Nicholas “Nick” Anderson passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on Aug. 15, 2022, at The Arbors, St. Barnabas.
He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Hitchcock Anderson in 2021.
He was born the sixth of nine children to Ukrainian immigrant parents, Harry and Catherine Anderson in Nanty Glo, Pa. Nick grew up during the Depression, and from the time he was a little boy, he always had a job so that he could help his family.
Nick was an excellent athlete in high school, having played football, basketball and baseball. After high school graduation in 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, and served valiantly in the 287th Field Artillery Observation Battalion during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was part of many battles, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. After the war, he attended Indiana State Teachers College on the G.I. Bill, where he met his bride, Elizabeth Hitchcock, at a dance. They were married Jan. 1, 1949, and together raised four children.
After a short stint as a teacher, Nick joined the Erie Insurance Group in 1951. He worked his way up through the company ranks, eventually becoming vice president and branch manager for the entire Pittsburgh region. He served in that capacity until 1981, at which time he opened the Anderson Insurance Agency, which his daughter, Jane, and her husband, Randy, still operate today.
Nick loved his wife and family more than anything. He stayed very active his whole life by playing golf, bowling, playing cards and keeping his cars clean and his yard properly manicured! He was a wonderful storyteller, and will be remembered fondly for his endearing ways, his laugh and the twinkle in his eyes.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan and her husband, Vince, and Jane and her husband, Randy; his sons, Edward and his wife, Alison, and Richard and his wife, Ryeon; and 10 grandchildren.
