On Monday, caution tape blows in the wind as it surrounds a residence after a late Sunday night fire on Westview Drive in Butler Township. Lewis Angerett, 60, owner, said he believes the residence has been declared a total loss. Cary Shaffer/Butler Eagle

BUTLER TWP — Lewis Angerett has been renovating his Butler Township home to be a rental property, and had recently installed a new roof, furnace and washer and dryer in the home.

Multiple fire departments spent more than three hours Sunday night fighting a structure fire at his home at 107 Westview Drive, sending his plans up in flames.

Butler County 911 dispatched the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District around 9 p.m. to the area of Acre Avenue for a smoke investigation. After units arrived on scene, they requested a fire response.

“Crews got on the scene, and they found smoke showing throughout the whole house,” said Butler Township Fire Chief Kevin Smith.

Smith said he initially had two teams enter the home, one on the first floor and one into the basement, which is where the fire was believed to have started.

He said that upon entry, firefighters saw flames throughout the interior. He said the Angerett was not in the home.

Angerett said Monday that his home was fully insured, and his insurance adjuster estimated damage at $200,000 to the structure and $150,000 to its contents.

“They found that the floor had collapsed, and so we backed everybody out and attacked the fire from the exterior of the house,” Smith said.

Around 9:30 p.m., dispatchers sent another six departments to the scene to assist, and they continued fighting the blaze late into the evening.

Smith said due to the floor’s proven instability, they maintained the attack from the exterior, which made putting out smaller hot spots difficult.

Smith said warm temperatures and muggy conditions Sunday night also presented challenges.

One firefighter was hospitalized due to exertion but has been released, Smith said.

Fire departments from the Butler VA, Penn Township, Connoquenessing, Prospect, Unionville and Evans City responded to assist.

“Everybody brought people, and we used everybody who came,“ Smith said. ”We always appreciate all their help.”

Smith said the home, which had a heavy amount of damage from smoke, flames and water, is insured.

He said he could not determine a cause Sunday night, but the state police sent a fire marshal to the scene Monday.
