Maintenance man arrested for trespassing on tenants in SR
State police are accusing a maintenance man of drunkenly abusing his master key at the University Village in Slippery Rock Township and inappropriately entering people’s apartments.
Some time after 2 a.m. Saturday, police arrested Joshua E. Kaye, 31, of Slippery Rock Township, who smelled of alcohol and appeared drunk.
“Kaye had unsure footing and was unable to stand upright without assistance,” said police in the affidavit.
Kaye was arraigned later Saturday morning by District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz. His charges include three felony counts of trespassing, as well as misdemeanor counts of possessing criminal instruments and prowling.
Kaye was then placed in Butler County Prison on $50,000.
Police said they were dispatched to the apartment complex at 2:08 a.m. for a report of a man entering apartments without permission.
After speaking with multiple tenants, police discovered Kaye had entered two apartments without permission and unlocked the door of a third.
“Kaye used his employer-issued master key,” police said. “While unlocking the door at (one of the apartments,) Kaye stated that he was maintenance and asked if the victim wanted to see something cool.”
According to a state police news release, the alleged break-ins affected five tenants, all 20-years-old. Four of the tenants were women.
The charging documents did not offer context about what Kaye might have allegedly said or did in the other two apartments.
Kaye is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Sept. 14 before District Judge Joseph Nash.
