Butler native fatally stabbed in North Carolina

Police are continuing to investigate the homicide of a Butler native who had been stabbed Aug. 29 in Atlantic Beach, N.C., in a “random and senseless act of violence.”

“We have received numerous tips and are in the process of following up on all of them,” police said in a statement on the Atlantic Beach Facebook page.

Local media outlets said the killing of Randall Miller, 65, of Apex, N.C., happened around 5:45 a.m. at 300 W. Atlantic Blvd.

The Atlantic Beach Police Department is working with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

“At this stage of the investigation, we believe it was related to a burglary that the victim happened upon,” the statement said. “It appears to be a random and senseless act of violence. We do not believe the victim or anyone else in Atlantic Beach was targeted.”

According to the victim’s brother, Rick Miller of Butler, Randall Miller had been preparing a boat to fish in the ocean for a trip when the attack happened.

“He wasn’t looking for trouble. He was a good guy,” Miller said. “It’s just hard to understand. You can understand if someone gets sick, COVID or a bad car wreck. Something like this is senseless.”

According to Miller’s obituary, he was born and raised in Butler, graduating from Butler High School in 1975. Following school, he earned an associate’s degree from Electronic Institutes, which led him to a 35-year career with IBM in New York.

Rick Miller said his brother moved to North Carolina more than 25 years ago.

“He loved to fish,” he said. “That’s what attracted him to North Carolina.”

Miller said most of their family still lives in the Butler area, including his parents, Richard and Leah Miller of Butler, who survive.

He said that despite the move, Randall Miller still maintained many great friendships acquired during all stages and locations of his life.

“His wife will have a real good support group,“ Miller said.

As of Tuesday, police had yet to make any arrests, though they have offered descriptions of the three suspects. Police said the men are Black, of medium height and medium/stocky build.

Police said the suspects were wearing dark-colored clothing, sweatshirts and face coverings. Police said the men left in a silver sedan.

“This is one of only three murders in the history of Atlantic Beach and the first in over a decade,” the statement said. “The ABPD has a strong track record of solving crimes, and we hope this crime will be solved soon.”
