Jefferson Township gets half-million to refurbish pool
While the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced Jefferson Township will be a recipient of funding in the largest single investment in recreation and conservation in state history, the required match that comes with the funds could be an issue.
A news release from Gov. Tom Wolf’s office announced that $555,000 is earmarked for Jefferson Township to help fund a renovation project at SEBCO Pool in Laura J. Doerr Memorial Park.
But the grant comes with a 100% match requirement, which means the township must come up with $550,000 to put toward the project in order to use the grant money.
Greg Bauer, SEBCO board president, said a pool study commissioned by township supervisors offered four options for repairing the pool and its systems.
He said the least expensive $1 million estimated option would see a new liner installed to cover cracks in the pool, make repairs in the pump room and replace the pool heater.
Greg Bauer, SEBCO pool board president, said bids will be advertised soon to get an idea of the actual cost of the project.
While he had hoped work could begin in late fall, the requirement to raise the matching funds will likely delay the start of work, Bauer said.
He will consult with township officials regarding the matching funds.
Bauer stressed that regardless of any work ongoing during the project, the pool will remain open next summer.
Three other Butler County communities also received funding in the DCNR grant.
Jackson Township will receive $224,400 for further development of Jackson Township Park.
Marion Township will get $50,000 for rehabilitation of Marion Township Community Park.
Zelienople also will receive $50,000 for the rehabilitation of Zelienople Community Park.
