Creek oil spill cleanup underway
FORWARD TWP--An unknown amount of a petroleum-based product spilled into the Connoquenessing Creek in Butler on Thursday, and the cleanup process was ongoing Saturday afternoon.
A representative of the state Department of Environmental Protection, representatives from the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance, cleanup crews and the landowner at the area of the cleanup were stationed at the Eckstein Road Canoe Launch Saturday, where four "booms," or lines across the creek, were outfitted with oil-absorbent pads to soak up the discharge.
No officials could be reached as of 3:30 p.m. Saturday to explain how the spill happened or how much product entered the creek.
