Quarterback leads Slippery Rock past Greenville, 24-7
SLIPPERY ROCK — William Mokel and the Slippery Rock offense wasted little time in their matchup against Greenville on Friday night. On their first drive of the night, they marched down the field and set the tone for how the game would play out.
That drive went 67 yards in just two minutes and 20 seconds. Mokel, who passed the 3,000-passing yard career mark against Greenville, passed for 33 of those 67 yards and ran for another 12 of them.
The ball was punched in by Brett Galcik on a direct snap, however. After that, the game became a defensive battle. It wasn’t until five minutes into the second quarter that either team would get on the board again.

A screen pass from Mokel to Maddox Allen was taken the distance on the first play of their second drive in the quarter. The play saw Allen break multiple tackles and barrel into the end zone to give the Rockets a two-score lead.
The play of Mokel was something that many coaches dream of having at the quarterback position. On the night, he threw for 248 yards and ran for another 73.
“We’re going to put the ball in [Mokel’s] hands to be productive, and I think when he relaxes and plays well, you see those numbers and those accolades,” Slippery Rock head coach Larry Wendereusz, Jr. said. “Passing for 3,00 yards is awesome for him and awesome for our program.”
At the half, Slippery Rock carried a 17-0 lead. The Rockets would go up 24-0 on their first drive in the second half of play.
It was once again Galcik who took the ball in from the one-yard line. From there it was smooth coasting for the Rockets, who were able to manage their advantage.
The only Greenville score came on a 4th down pass that was lobbed up by Nick Solderich to Jase Herrick, who somehow managed to come down with the ball.
But to Wendereusz, his team looked good, and they won’t be mad putting another tally in that win column.
“We’ll never be upset being 3-0, we still got a few things to clean up and we still have to become a better football team overall, but again I felt like we came out solid,” Wendereusz said.
