Twin brother of homicide suspect sought on different charges

This story was updated at 1:00 p.m. Sept. 19 to reflect that Charles Lloyd was detained, but not arrested. A previous version of this story said he had been arrested.

State police last week detained a man they initially thought to be a homicide suspect, but instead, it turned out to be his twin brother.

“I observed a male exit the rear passenger seat of a red Ford F-150 that matched the description of a suspect wanted for homicide,” said police in charging documents.

Despite the confusion, charges were still filed against Charles Daniel Lloyd, 20, of Pittsburgh, who police have since identified as the “identical twin” brother of Daniel Charles Lloyd, 20, of Pitcairn.

In June, Daniel Lloyd was charged with criminal homicide related to the killing of an Ohio man in Muddy Creek Township. He remains at large.

While not accused of homicide, Charles Lloyd and an alleged accomplice, Tylah J. Witherspoon, 24, of Pittsburgh, are accused of being found with drugs and a gun during a Sept. 2 traffic stop in Clay Township.

Arrest warrants were issued Thursday for both Charles Lloyd and Witherspoon, after charges were filed. The charges include felony counts of possessing a gun with an altered serial number and drug sales, as well as misdemeanor counts of possessing drug paraphernalia and making repairs to an offensive weapon.

Charles Lloyd is additionally charged with one felony count of carrying a gun without a license and misdemeanor count of driving under the influence.

According to the affidavit, police stopped the vehicle around 11:44 a.m. along West Sunbury Road. Police initially saw the truck in Center Township. While following it, police said they saw it cross the center line twice and driving on the wrong side of the road three times.

“There was a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle,” police said. “Consent was asked for and denied (to search the vehicle). A search warrant was applied for an obtained.”

Police then positively identified Charles Lloyd and noted him as the driver.

They took him to the state police barracks for a drug recognition evaluation, and he agreed to have his blood tested for intoxication. The results of that blood test were not included in the affidavit.

During a later search of the vehicle, police found a 40-caliber pistol with an obliterated serial number, a 9mm pistol, a bag of marijuana, a black scale and a container with 53 stamp bags. It was not clear if the stamp bags were filled with any substances.

Once arrested, both Charles Lloyd and Witherspoon will be arraigned before a district judge and scheduled for a preliminary hearing.
