Man charged after chase, crash in July

Two months after a Forest County man led police on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash on Parker Pike, Allegheny Township, he has been charged.

State police filed charges Monday against Michael P. Crum, 42, of Clarington, Pa., including felony counts of fleeing from police and driving under the influence; misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and flight to avoid arrest; and 12 summary traffic violations related to the crash in the early morning hours of July 13.

Crum has yet to be arraigned on the charges, following which he will be issued a bond and scheduled with a preliminary hearing before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.

Police said around 1:30 a.m. July 13, they began following Crum’s vehicle, which they spotted in Parker, Armstrong County. Police said the vehicle crossed lines on the road. Its registration was expired, and they found the owner, Crum, had a warrant for his arrest.

“Once on Parker Pike (in Butler County,) troopers initiated their emergency lights, initiating a traffic stop. The Mercedes failed to yield,” police said. “The Mercedes fled at a high rate of speed more than 90 mph in a clearly marked 55 mph zone.”

The chase ended with Crum’s vehicle leaving the road and rolling over. Police said Crum’s passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered injuries that required his transport to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Crum’s blood was tested and later revealed to show a blood-alcohol content at 0.205%, which is about 2½ times the legal limit of 0.08.

Crum has four past DUI convictions since 2014, making this his fifth with the 10-year monitored period.
