Man accused of Lawrence County homicide waives local hearing

CHICORA — A Lawrence county man, accused of a homicide in Lawrence County, waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday in a Butler County case involving identity theft.

Shane McDevitt, 36, of New Castle, appeared virtually for the proceeding, as he is being held in Lawrence County Prison while awaiting trial for a criminal homicide charge related to the killing of his mother, Cecelia Liposky, 65, of New Castle. McDevitt remains without bail in that case.

The case, filed through District Judge Lewis Stoughton’s office, states that McDevitt has been charged with felony identity theft, as well as misdemeanor counts of unauthorized device access and theft.

Following the waived hearing, the case now proceeds to the Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Charging documents in the case accuse McDevitt of stealing three of his then girlfriend’s credit and debit cards and a container of change valued at $150.

Police said McDevitt then used the cards to withdraw about $400.

Court documents allege that the theft happened just two days before the homicide.

On the local charges, McDevitt is scheduled to appear next for arraignment Nov. 15 in county court.

According to court records, McDevitt was ordered to complete a psychological evaluation in May, and he is next to appear in court Oct. 3 on the homicide charge.
