Shultz

Dr. H. Charles Shultz, 91, of Jamestown, Pa., died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022.

He was born in Erie on Jan. 31, 1931, to Homer and Helen (Boyd) Shultz.

Dr. Shultz was a graduate of Lawrence Park High School, where he earned his Eagle Scout in Troop 17.

He earned a B.S. degree from Slippery Rock State Teachers College, M.S. degrees from the University of Illinois and Westminster College, and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.

He married the love of his life, Arlene (Summerhill), in August 1959.

He taught and coached in both Jamestown, Pa., and Greenville, Pa., and served as a principal in Jamestown. He also was a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the Mount Lebanon School District, before becoming the superintendent of schools in Fairview, Pa. He returned to Slippery Rock as the superintendent of schools from 1977 to 1986. Upon his retirement from Slippery Rock, he taught master’s and doctoral programs at Youngstown State University. He also served as an adjunct professor at Edinboro University and Penn State University.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of the Korean conflict, and served for 22 years on both active and reserve duties before retiring as a commissioned chief warrant officer. He was an active member and served on the board of directors of the French Creek Valley Chapter of the Military Officer Association of America.

Chuck was active in many organizations, including memberships on executive committees of the Boy Scouts of America, The United Way of Butler and Northern Mercer counties, the Pennsylvania Elementary Principals Association and the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators. He also served two years as president of the Slippery Rock University Alumni Association.

He was a Rotarian for more than 50 years, and served as district governor for District 7280. He and Arlene attended Rotary International conventions around the world. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and an active member of the director’s staff in the Zem Zem Temple in Erie. He was on the “road crew” that transported children to the Erie Shrine Hospital.

Travel, family, gardening, woodworking, hunting and water sports were important to him throughout his life. He and Arlene traveled to all 50 states and around the world. They were blessed with three children and eight grandchildren, and cherished their family time together.

He is survived by his children, Cathy (Kip) Mostowy, Mike (Tracey) Shultz and Cindy (Rich) von Hollen; and his grandchildren, Amanda, Nicole and Lance Mostowy, Christopher and Jonathan Shultz, and Katie, Henry and Sarah von Hollen.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and sister, Alice Lamb.

SHULTZ — The family of Dr. H. Charles Shultz, who died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1 Trinity Place, Greenville, Pa.

A celebration of life will take place immediately following visitation at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at the church, with the Rev. Brenda Martin, pastor of the church, officiating. A livestream of the service will be available. Please go to www.holytrinitygreenvillepa.com for the link.

Military honors will be presented by VFW/AMVETS/Honor Guard of Jamestown, Pa., with a reception in the church to follow.
