Helen J. Ward, 103, of Cabot, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.

Helen was born in Sarver on Aug. 18, 1919, and was a daughter of the late Gertrude E. (O’Brian) and Herbert G. Welsh.

She was the widow of Jack Ward, who passed in 2009.

She was a 1937 graduate of Freeport High School and was class valedictorian.

She received her nursing degree in 1940 from Allegheny General School of Nursing, where she graduated number one in her class.

She worked for many years as a private duty nurse at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights.

Helen was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Joseph Church in Cabot.

Helen really loved playing cards, especially with her family and especially 500. She loved winning the prize at card parties, which she always won. She also enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her family.

Helen is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen and Albert Zigo of River Forest, Judy Ward of San Diego, Calif., and Christine Ward of Pittsburgh; and three sons, James and Pamela Duke Ward of Memphis, Tenn., John and Candy Ward of Renfrew, and Jeff and Penny Ward of Buffalo Township.

She also is survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her son, S. Daniel Ward; her three brothers, Patrick, Robert and John Welsh; and four sisters, Alice Eichenholtz, Kathleen Stepp, Mary Jane Meyer and Marsha Albig.

WARD — Family and friends of Helen J. Ward, who died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at REDMOND FUNERAL HOME, 524 High St., Freeport.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Joseph Church, 315 Stoney Hollow Road, Cabot, with Father Ward Stakem officiating.

Burial will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Freeport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christian Mothers, c/o St. Francis Parish, 315 Stoney Hollow Road, Cabot, PA 16023; and/or the Cabot Food Bank, 707 Winfield Road, Cabot PA 16023.
