Three people steal $1,000 in gift cards, Cranberry police said
Three individuals face felony charges after police said they stole $1,000 worth of gift cards by confusing a Shop ’n Save cashier last week.
On Tuesday, Cranberry Township Police Department charged Huliu Cocarica, 30, and Lamaita Sava, 57, both of Pennsylvania, and Riccardo Sava, 21, of Flushing, N.Y., with third-degree felony theft and conspiracy.
Cocarica was arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Kevin Flaherty and is being held in Butler County Prison on a $250,000 bond.
Riccardo Sava and Lamaita Sava have not been arrested, and preliminary hearings have not been scheduled.
According to charging documents, the three individuals entered the Cranberry Shop ’n Save location at 10 p.m. Sept. 19 and requested to purchase $1,000 worth of pre-paid Visa gift cards. The cashier activated the cards and counted the money that Cocarica provided her.
“(The cashier) told Cocarica there was not enough cash to complete the transaction. During this exchange, the cashier had given the activated cards to Cocarica who gave the cards to Riccardo Sava,” the investigating officer said.
The cashier proceeded to hand the money back to Cocarica while Lamaita Sava handed a bag of gift cards to the cashier. Police said Cocarica told the cashier they were leaving the store to get more money from an ATM.
“It was later discovered that the gift cards given back to the cashier were not the same gift cards the cashier had activated,” the officer said. “The three individuals named above created a hectic and confusing encounter for the cashier.”
Police said the stolen gift cards were later used to purchase goods from Walmart.
Cocarica is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Oct. 7.
