John R. Slater, 74, of Butler, passed away, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, while residing at Sunnyview Home.

Born July 16, 1948, in Butler, he was a son of the late Richard R. Slater and Ann (Crevar) Slater.

John had worked at Pullman Standard until the plant closed, and then for the Armco Steel plant in Butler.

He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Tionesta, spending time with his dogs, and hunting, fishing, camping and gardening.

John had been in the U.S. Army National Guard for 26 years, where he was a recruiter for three years, had been deployed to Tionesta in 1985 following the tornado, and had many trainings throughout the world.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Shaffer; his three children, John D. (Michelle) Slater, Janice (Russell) Neff and Barry (Raine) Slater; one stepdaughter, Nicole Leight; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Karen Shay.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Danielle Leight; and one granddaughter, Haley Leight.

SLATER — Friends of John R. Slater, who died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Wendelin Roman Catholic Church, 210 Saint Wendelin Road, Butler.

Interment will follow with military honors in St. Wendelin’s Parish Cemetery.
