Mars to golf in WPIAL final

Blake Bertolo earned medalist honors with a 72 and Mars advanced to the WPIAL 3A boys golf team championship by placing second in Tuesday’s semifinal round at Duck Hollow Golf Course in Uniontown.

The Planets posted a team score of 401, five strokes behind Peters Township and seven strokes ahead of third-place Moon. The top three in the nine-team field advanced.

James Kinghorn and Lucas Singh both shot an 80 for the Planets. Will Campbell shot an 83, Ryan Steigerwald 86 and Colin Stevenson 94.

The WPIAL 3A Championship is scheduled for Cedarbrook on Thursday.

Class 2A — Freeport and Knoch both competed for the chance to advance to the WPIAL championship, but came up short in a semifinal at The Links at Spring Church in Apollo.

With the top three teams moving on, Freeport placed fifth with 447 strokes and Knoch came in seventh with 459 strokes.

The Yellowjackets’ score included efforts from Jayden Diehl (86), Nate Covey (88), Stephen Evans (89), Matt Ziembicki-Reedy (91) and Cam Zigo (93).

Knoch’s individual scores were not available.

Derry, Mohawk and Quaker Valley each advanced.

Girls Soccer

Crystal Zembrzuski, Aleah Parisons and Peyton Los scored goals as Freeport blanked Valley, 3-0. Akina Boynton had an assist.

Olivia Giancola was the goalkeeper for the shutout.

Karns City 8, Brookville 3 — McKenna Martin totaled four goals and an assist in this win for the Gremlins (11-3).

Emma Dailey added three goals and two assists while Hanna Dailey contributed one goal and a pair of assists.

Other assists came from Addy Christie, Avah Burke and Aubrey Price.

The Gremlins travel to Punxsutawney on Thursday.

Slippery Rock 9, Sharon 0 — Hannah Plunkard’s hat trick led this rout of the Tigers.

Also scoring for the Rockets were Emma Hays, Calley Wolinski, Brooke Arblaster, Ella Thimons and Shannon Stanley.

Cross Country

Slippery Rock’s teams improved to 3-2 with wins over Wilmington. The boys won 24-32 and Wilmington did not field a complete girls team. The Rockets compete next Tuesday at Sharon.

Boys Soccer

Derry’s defense did not have a good night against Freeport’s attack.

Garrett Risch scored three times while Isaac Wetzel had one goal and one assist as the Yellowjackets crushed the Trojans, 5-0.

Zach Fairman and Ryan Sutara both had an assist and Ethan Rapp made four saves for Freeport (7-8, 7-6), which hosts Deer Lakes Thursday in the final game of the regular season.

Volleyball

Ava Plunkard dished out 38 assists and added 23 digs in Butler’s 3-1 win over North Hills.

Brynn Morton tallied 10 kills and 20 digs and Maisy Gibson, who has been out all season with a knee injury, served an ace in the victory for Butler (5-6).

The win came by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-18.

Keystone 3, Moniteau 0 — Sydney Bayless tallied four kills and five blocks in the Warriors’ 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 defeat.

Bella Hernandez added eight blocks, Abbey Jewart 10 assists and four aces.

Blackhawk 3, Knoch 0 — Alyssa Gallagher had seven kills in this loss for Knoch (6-7, 4-4).

Clarion-Limestone 3, A-C Valley 1 — Lexi Ruckdeschel tallied 10 kills, three blocks and 13 digs for the Falcons (7-6), who lost this match 14-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-25. Mackenzie Parks added six kills and 23 digs, Bella Ielease six kills, Jenna Stefanacci 19 assists and 15 digs.

A-C Valley hosts Union Thursday.

Hockey

Brody Simko scored the lone goal for Butler in a 5-1 loss to South Fayette. Parker Worsely assisted. EJ Delaney made 25 saves in goal.

The Golden Tornado host Penn Trafford at 7:10 p.m. Monday at the Frozen Pond.
