Roger N. Oesterling, 80, formerly of Butler, passed away Oct. 21, 2022, in Hickory, N.C.

Born Sept. 6, 1942, in Butler, he was a son of the late Norman Oesterling and Annabelle Herold Oesterling Fleming (Dale B. Fleming).

He was a dedicated father and husband, who loved his family immensely and unconditionally.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Stornant; his two sons, Mark (Kate) Oesterling of Hickory, N.C., and Dr. Scott (Karen) Oesterling of Menlo Park, Calif.; four sisters, Sylvia Gucken of Northville, Mich., Norma (Chuck) Norris and Rosie Hanna of Butler, and Pamela Wiltgen of Maysville, Ky.; five grandchildren (who called him “Poppy”), Eric, Samuel, Isaac, Alex and Shea; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roger and Mary made their home and community for many years in both Plantation and St. Petersburg, Fla.

He graduated from Butler Senior High in 1960, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Grove City College in 1965.

He had a long and notable career as a systems engineer, software developer and program manager. He made many innovative product developments in his field for Bailey Controls, Systems Engineering Laboratories, Gould Computers, Timeplex, Racal Datacom, SK Technologies and Tracking & Imaging Systems.

Roger was a lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He was a CCA member and protector of the health, habitat and sustainability of Florida’s marine resources. Roger was a certified scuba diver and fantastic fishing captain. He was an advocate for anglers and divers having responsible access to Florida waters. Roger worked diligently to acquire materials and execute the build of a reef off Anna Maria Island in honor of his nephew, Sean Gucken.

Roger will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

OESTERLING — Catholic in faith, a celebration of the life of Roger N. Oesterling, who died Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, will be held in Islamorada Key, Fla.
