Butler County hires new director for Bureau of Elections
Butler County has hired Chantell McCurdy as director of its Bureau of Elections, just in time to oversee the general election Nov. 8.
McCurdy has spent the last five years working as a registrar in the bureau. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Penn State University. She succeeds Aaron Sheasley, who left the position nearly six months ago.
“I’ll be overseeing the voter registration process in the bureau, ensuring the mapping and assessments of precincts and military and overseas ballots,” she said.
She will oversee four registrars and a poll worker/precinct coordinator.
McCurdy added the county does not have an early voting process, but voters applying for a mail-in ballot can fill out the application and present identification in the bureau office. They will be issued a mail-in ballot that they can fill out and seal.
“They’ll be counted with the other mail-in ballots beginning at 7 a.m. on Election Day,” she said.
McCurdy’s hiring was approved by county commissioners following interviews of job candidates, said Wil White, county solicitor.
McCurdy’s hiring is contingent upon ratification by the Salary Board at its next public meeting.
White said McCurdy’s hiring was a formalization of the fact she had been de facto head of the bureau for months, handling the day-to-day duties of the bureau while he handled its administration.
The Salary Board is next slated to meet Nov. 15 after general election, he said.
