No need to turn the big hands back, thanks to technology
At one time, a brave county worker had to teeter outside the clock tower at the County Courthouse to change the hands on Butler’s answer to Big Ben.
Today, said Mark Hillwig of the county maintenance team, a digital computer system purchased about a decade ago automatically deals with the twice-yearly changes required in daylight saving time.
“They probably haven’t manually changed the time in that tower for 30 or 40 years,” Hillwig said.
When it’s time to fall back one hour, which occurs this weekend, the hands will hold at midnight for an hour.
In the spring time change, the hands move forward rapidly one hour at midnight.
Hillwig said he is still waiting for the gears that will repair the front-facing clock. They are being made in Cincinnati, and Hillwig expects them to be complete soon.
All county residents are reminded to turn back their clocks by one hour before they hit the hay on Saturday night.
